Lahaina's Holiday Looks a Little Different This Year — Here's Where to Celebrate

The Fourth of July has a different feel here on Maui than almost anywhere else, warm trade winds, a golden sunset over the water, and a whole island finding its own way to celebrate. If you're calling West Maui home this year, whether you're renting with us or just settling into the neighborhood, here's a local's guide to the holiday.
A Quieter Front Street This Year
For decades, Lahaina Town hosted Maui's biggest Independence Day fireworks show. For 2026, there will not be a public fireworks display in Lahaina, as the Lahaina Town Action Committee has again chosen not to host one while the community continues to recover and rebuild following the August 2023 wildfire. It's a meaningful choice, and one the whole island understands and supports.
That doesn't mean the holiday spirit is missing from West Maui — it just looks a little different this year, with the celebrating happening a few miles up the coast.
Where to Celebrate in West Maui
● Whalers Village, Kaanapali — Free live music from the Maui Community Band and Nā Alii Big Band, 6–8pm in the Ohana Courtyard. An easy, relaxed way to spend the evening without fighting for parking.
● The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Kaanapali — Their annual 'Flowerworks' helicopter orchid drop happens midday, followed by a synchronized drone light show in the evening. Both are visible from the public beach fronting the resort, not just to hotel guests.
● Wailea Beach (South Maui) — If you don't mind the drive, this is where Maui's main fireworks show has moved, hosted with the Wailea Community Association, typically starting around 9pm.
● Makawao Stampede — Upcountry's beloved paniolo tradition runs July 3rd through 5th at the Oskie Rice Event Center, with rodeo events, food, and local flavor all weekend.
Renting in West Maui? A Few Reminders
If you're one of our tenants settling in for the holiday weekend, a couple of friendly notes:
● Personal fireworks are heavily restricted in Hawai'i — most aerial and firecracker-type fireworks require a permit, and many common types are simply not legal for personal use on Maui. Enjoy the professional shows instead.
● Expect heavier traffic on the honoapiilani highway and around Kaanapali in the evening hours as folks head to and from events.
● If you're grilling or hosting at home, please be mindful of quiet hours and shared spaces if you're in a multi-unit property — your neighbors will thank you.
